From Booklist

The certainties in life must now include death, taxes--and Andrew Tobias. Every three to five years, the financial reference industry's most modestly titled book gets a remodeling job, whether or not it is needed. Aside from his My Vast Fortune (1997), this is Tobias' annuity--and a true labor of love. How else could anyone explain the easy-going conversational style that lures the reader into a nodding complacency about a specific kind of investment vehicle until the three words, "don't buy them?" He succeeds in holding our interest precisely because the examples are pulled from real life, the same-old-same-old explanations (like compounding interest) are avoided, and he ruthlessly skirts platitudes. So his "trust no one" chapter begins with life insurance commercials and concludes with speculative can't-miss deals. Everything is up-to-date here; it would be a risk to miss this, the eighth, edition. Barbara JacobsCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This is a fun book and a great start if you know nothing about investing. But if you know the basics (stocks, funds, real estate, etc) you won't learn much.I doubt you can get rich or even have a comfortable retirement by simply not losing money, but it doesn't hurt and that's the best part of this book. Again, if you know you should pay off your credit cards, buy large quantities at Costco, drive a small used car and get plane tickets from Priceline, you won't find much new.But what about building some wealth? Now here, we have a problem. The correct "answer" is, you start putting money in a Roth IRA and an index fund, when you are in your 20's. In just 30 or 40 short years you will have a pile of dough. Even better, with 30 or 40 years, no matter what the stock market does, you can ride it out.But alas, hardly anybody in their 20s or even 30s has money to put aside and leave untouched for all those years. Say you're 40 and decide its never too late. As I write this, the stock market is hitting a new high almost every day. Yet the news about jobs, housing and Iraq is all bad. So sooner or later (and probably sooner) the market will tank and it may take 10 years to recover. Now you're age 50 and you've got just 10-15 years to earn enough for retirement. Its not the fault of this book that there is no solution to this dilemma. But I think a more realistic approach would be to offer these four possible "solutions". (1) Inherit lots of money. (2) Be very lucky in the stock market, (3) Get a job that offers a pension, preferably written into law so they cannot screw you or, best of all (4) Get a high paying job early in your career, so you can put all that money aside. The strength of this book is in what it tells you not to do. But minimizing mistakes only takes you so far.

I purchased a very early edition of this book back in the 80's and you have to believe me, it changed my world. Sound, practical financial advice when you are starting out in life is an invaluable aid. I have since given away copies to all the young people I know as a graduation gift and like to think it has helped them start out on the right foot too.I bought this update just to read Andy's insight into all the changes we are seeing in the financial arena and a quick review didn't disappoint me. I will finish reading it again cover to cover (OK I will skim some of it) by the weekend. After all when you are comfortably retired (fiscally and physically) you have time to indulge yourself with a good read.BUY THIS BOOK!

This is a great book for people looking to learn the basics of investing and saving money, if you're starting from zero. The author spends at least half of the book talking about day to day spending tips, like buying in bulk or purchasing cars that get good gas mileage. For someone like me who grew up in a thrifty family, a lot of this was common sense and I kind of flipped through to the latter half of the book where he talks about basic investment strategy. Spoiler alert: he advocates investing in index funds so if you're already in that camp you might not find a lot of extra information in this book. However, to me there were enough gems and clever tips that it was still worth it. Plus, he explains a lot of basic investing terms for people who are totally new to the subject.

The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need should be required reading for anyone who wants to invest. I read the first edition back in the 1970s and it has been the foundation of my investments for the past 40 years. Do not invest a penny until you have read this book.

If you haven't read this book, you should. If you have read it, you should be doing better financially than before you read it. If you have read it and you are not doing better, you didn't learn anything, or didn't have the sense or the discipline to apply what you read. I don't know whether or not it is really the only investment guide you'll ever need. That may depend on how much money you need to worry about managing. But it seems like a pretty sound one for the average person who wants to use money more sensibly and plan for the future without doing extensive research or daily monitoring. A modicum of common sense and a fair amount of discipline are the primary prerequisites for following Tobias's advice. If you have those, and you are interested in putting your money to work for you, you will find that Tobias has advice that is both sound and reasonably simple. His basic advice: regular investment in a no-load mutual fund is the best way to go for most people who want to do something more with their money than leave it in the bank and wonder. But there is a lot more in the book than that (it doesn't take 300 pages to deliver that message, even though he does deliver it more than once), from an opening chapter designed to save you $1,000 a year on everyday expenses, to details about brokerages, investment instruments, and much more. Adding to the appeal of the book is Tobias's writing style, combining clarity, knowledge, and humor. It really is enjoyable to read, which a person like me would not be predisposed to say about an investment book. I should have read it 30 years ago (the first edition appeared in 1978 and there have been several revisions since then; this 2010 edition says it is completely revised and updated), but perhaps it is not too late for me to get a little bit smarter.

Simply the best book on investments for the small, individual investor. It gives good reasons for keeping your investment strategy simple and explains why in clear easy to understand language. This book provides you with all you need to know to save for retirement. Save yourself the time of wading through all the investment schemes and get-rich-quick nonsense and follow the simple and solid advise given in this book. I have recommended this book many times to family and friends.
